It’s going to be a hot one in Portland.
High temperatures on Sunday and Monday are expected to reach 95 degrees, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory from 10 a.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Monday.
The first stretch of very hot summer days can be especially risky, as our bodies have not yet adjusted to the heat, Multnomah County warns. While the county has not opened public cooling centers, it offers a map of libraries, splash pads, and community centers where residents can cool off.
The National Weather Service advises Portlanders to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and limit strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
For those heading to local waterways, remember that rivers are still cold due to snow runoff filling the Willamette and Columbia. Swimmers should watch for signs of hypothermia and avoid alcohol, which raises the risk. Fast currents are another hazard; officials recommend wearing life jackets, keeping a close watch on children, and swimming with a buddy.
Relief is on the way later in the week. Tuesday’s high is forecast to reach the upper 80s, and by Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop to 75 degrees.
