PERTH AMBOY — Nearly a dozen patients have accused a New Jersey urgent care doctor of rape and groping at clinics across the state, officials said.
The Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday that 57-year-old Gurvindra Johal has been indicted on two counts of second-degree sexual assault and 11 counts of fourth-degree sexual contact.
A state grand jury reviewed evidence from a wide-ranging investigation led by prosecutors in three counties. Johal, a Colonia resident, was first arrested on February 25, 2023, after two female patients accused him of misconduct at his Perth Amboy practice on Cornell Street.
Now, authorities say Johal is facing allegations from ten separate incidents at urgent care locations in Perth Amboy, Freehold Township, and Newark.
Five of the reported assaults occurred in Middlesex County, where at least one woman was allegedly forced to have sex against her will. Three more cases were reported in Newark, and two in Freehold, according to officials.
Theresa Hilton, Director of the Division of Criminal Justice, described Johal as a “serial offender” who exploited his role as a physician for personal gratification.
In addition to the sexual assault charges, Johal is also facing one count of falsifying records and another for falsifying medical care documentation—both fourth-degree charges.
Authorities say one victim reported inappropriate touching to her insurance company, which launched an investigation. Johal allegedly sent false information to the insurer, claiming a medical assistant had been present during the exam—something not reflected in the original records.
“Medical patients need to be able to trust that they will be treated with respect, care, and professionalism when they seek treatment,” said Attorney General Matthew Platkin. “For a doctor to allegedly prey upon patients is something we will not tolerate.”
