Firefighters made major progress over the weekend on two large wildfires in Oregon, as both fires slowed after rapid early growth.
The Rowena Fire, which began near The Dalles last Wednesday, quickly burned over 3,000 acres by Thursday. Since then, it hasn’t grown much. As of Monday morning, crews reported 24% containment.
The fire destroyed at least 56 homes and continues to threaten more than 130 others. Over 300 people remain under Level 3 — Go Now! evacuation orders. Nearly 6,000 more are under Level 1 and 2 evacuation notices.
The Ferry Fire, which broke out Thursday in Sherman County, burned more than 9,000 acres by Friday. By Monday morning, it reached just under 10,500 acres and was nearly 80% contained.
Extra firefighting teams were called in to support local crews on both fires. Those teams are now starting to demobilize and return to their home units.
Weather this week should help efforts near the Rowena and Ferry fires. Temps are expected to stay in the 70s through Thursday, with highs in the 60s and possible showers by the weekend.
