Three people were arrested in Kentucky after officers found children and a disabled adult living in what they called the worst conditions they’ve ever encountered.
Amy Nichols, 30, faces charges of child abuse, neglecting a disabled adult, and animal cruelty. Robert Ransdell, 38, and Matthew Hardin, 26, were charged with child abuse and complicity in the neglect of a disabled adult and animal cruelty.
According to arrest records obtained by WKYT and WDKY, police visited a home in Harrodsburg—about 30 miles from Lexington—on June 10 during a child neglect investigation. Officers said three children under 12 and a disabled adult with the mental capacity of a sixth grader were living there.
When officers entered the house, they were hit by the strong smell of feces and ammonia.
“The floor was covered in feces, and all surfaces were buried in garbage, including rotting food,” police wrote. “The fridge had a lock on it and was filled with spoiled food and cockroaches. None of the food in the home was safe to eat.”
One child told officers they hadn’t had lunch or dinner and had only eaten cereal.
Police also found three dogs and five cats living inside the home.
Officers deemed the house uninhabitable due to the serious health risks, noting it was the worst they had ever seen.
All three suspects are being held without bond at the Jessamine County Jail. Their next court date is set for June 26.
