NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Multiple Northstate agencies spent the weekend searching for Lesner Noe Velasquez Cardenas, a Redding man who vanished nearly two weeks ago after being dropped off at the Avalanche Gulch trailhead on Mount Shasta.
The Redding Police Department (RPD) reported that the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deployed their search and rescue team on Friday and Saturday to comb the area for any signs of Cardenas. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) also joined the effort, using aircraft to assist in the search, but they were unable to find him.
Police said Cardenas’ cellphone hasn’t had service since the day he disappeared, though he had it with him when last seen.
The 21-year-old was involved in a car accident on May 29 and was later picked up by a taxi near Wells Fargo on East Cypress Avenue just before 2:30 p.m., according to RPD. He was then driven to Mount Shasta carrying backpacking gear. Authorities mentioned that Cardenas had expressed interest in trying to beat a friend’s hiking time.
Redding Police urge anyone with information to contact Sergeant Josiah Ferrin at 530-225-4200.
