NEW YORK CITY — Governor Kathy Hochul announced Sunday that New York is on “high alert” following U.S. military strikes on Iran.
Hochul said the MTA and Port Authority have activated counterterrorism protocols in response to the situation.
“We are not aware of any specific or credible threat to New Yorkers. However, given New York’s distinctive global profile, we are taking this situation extraordinarily seriously,” Hochul said. “All State agencies, utilities, and other critical infrastructure facilities are on high alert.”
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the NYPD will increase its presence at religious, cultural, and diplomatic locations across the city.
A protest is also scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Times Square, opposing U.S. involvement in Iran.
The U.S. military launched strikes early Sunday on three Iranian sites—Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz—as part of an operation aligned with Israel’s ongoing efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran’s state media confirmed the targets.
This marks a major escalation, following more than a week of Israeli airstrikes aimed at crippling Iran’s air defenses and missile systems.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that the president has no intention of engaging in “open-ended” warfare.
