Indiana’s progress in building electric vehicle (EV) charging stations hasn’t stopped — even as the Trump administration freezes nearly $100 million in federal funding intended for interstate EV infrastructure.
A public education initiative called Go Electric Vehicle Indiana (GOEVIN) is now spreading the word that while large-scale federal support may be on pause, millions in alternative funding remain available for expanding EV charging access.
Alternative Funding Still Up for Grabs
Carl Lisek of Drive Clean Indiana, a GOEVIN partner, says Indiana still has over $3.1 million for DC fast chargers and nearly $170,000 for Level 2 chargers — all part of Indiana’s share of the Volkswagen emissions scandal settlement.
Though much of that money has already been spent, it’s still helping fund EV infrastructure in areas not yet served, including smaller cities like Dale and Martinsville. The goal: close gaps in coverage and reduce “range anxiety” — the fear of running out of power before finding a charger.
Some Installations on Hold Due to Federal Uncertainty
Constantin Popa, a former college basketball coach turned tech rep for Donnellon McCarthy Enterprises, says uncertainty has led some of his clients — including a hospital — to pause their charger installations.
“They figured this would be good info to have, just knowing there are other avenues for funding,” Popa said during a GOEVIN stop in Indianapolis this week.
Indiana’s EV Landscape
-
189 DC fast chargers
-
490 Level 2 chargers
-
EVs account for only ~3% of plated vehicles in Indiana (2023)
-
INDOT has selected 39 fast charger sites for NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) funding once federal support resumes
While it’s unclear when or if the federal NEVI funds will be released under the current administration, Lisek remains optimistic:
“It’s not the end all be all, but with what’s already been deployed and with some help in EV deserts, Indiana will remain a strong state for electric vehicles,” he said.
