Texas is one of the few states with its own state pledge of allegiance—something that surprised one recent transplant.

Everyone knows Texans love their state. I’ve talked to people from all over, but no one shows the kind of pride Texans have for Texas.

It might seem over-the-top, but it’s definitely earned.

Why Texans Love Texas So Much

Where else can you drive all day on one highway and never leave the state? Texas has rivers you can surf, multiple islands, one of the world’s longest beaches, and a mix of deserts, mountains, forests, swamps, and extreme climates.

Texas also has multiple state animals, including a state dog, and a pledge of allegiance. Only 17 states have one, and our neighbor New Mexico is among them.

The Texas State Pledge

If you’ve never heard it before, here it is: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”

A woman who moved to Texas recently was surprised by this and shared her reaction on TikTok. The video went viral and sparked some funny comments like, “I want somebody to love me the way Texans love Texas,” and “Texas is a cult.” The Texas pride is real, y’all.

Funny (and Totally Made-Up) State Symbols of Texas

State Footwear: Crocs – Worn everywhere, from Walmart to the dollar store. Cowboy boots are close behind but only with shorts and a tank top.
State Color: Dirt – Sure, we claim red, white, and blue, but our highways say dirt.
State Plant: Refinery – Fitting, thanks to our huge oil industry.
State Flag: The Gonzales Battle Flag – You’ll see this “Come and Take It” flag almost as often as the Lone Star.
State Vegetable: Politicians – The official one is the Texas Sweet Onion, but jokes say politicians fit better.
State Bird: Mosquito – They’re basically the size of birds here.
State Flower: Traffic Cone – Bluebonnets may be official, but traffic cones are everywhere and bloom year-round.
State Snack: Meth – Officially it’s chips and salsa, but some joke that meth gets more attention.
State Fish: Jesus Fish – Found on the back of every SUV and minivan.
State Tree: Wind Turbine – No leaves, just Texas wind.
State Pastime: Teen Pregnancy – Texas ranks among the top in the country.
State Metal: Pantera – No explanation needed for metal fans.
State Motto: Fixin’ To – Every Texan is always fixin’ to do something.
