INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A young boy has died after being found with a gunshot wound outside a car in a drugstore parking lot on Thursday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Emergency crews were called around 2:50 p.m. to the 2300 block of East 46th Street, near the CVS at the northwest corner of East 46th Street and North Keystone Avenue. The area is a busy commercial stretch on the city’s north side.
The toddler was initially reported in critical condition and transported to Riley Hospital for Children. By Thursday night, police confirmed the child had died.
IMPD investigators believe the shooting was accidental and occurred inside a vehicle. The child’s name and exact age have not yet been released.
Several individuals remained at the scene to assist the boy and cooperate with police, officials said.
IMPD Sgt. William Young emphasized the tragic event as a stark reminder for gun owners to secure their firearms and keep them out of the reach of children.
