MARION COUNTY, Ind. — Beginning next month, drivers on I-465 in Indianapolis will be allowed to go a bit faster. The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that the speed limit on most of the I-465 loop will rise from 55 to 65 mph, following the passage of House Bill 1461 during the 2025 legislative session.

Authored by Indiana State Rep. Jim Pressel, a Republican from northern Indiana, the road funding-focused bill was signed into law by Governor Mike Braun on May 1. In addition to increasing speed limits, the bill includes broader updates to roads and infrastructure statewide.

INDOT officials said crews will begin installing new speed limit signs on or after July 1. They expect minimal impact to traffic during the process, which should take about a week, weather permitting.

The speed limit will remain at 55 mph between 86th Street and 96th Street on the northwest side of the loop due to the existing roadway design. Work zone speed limits will also stay in place for the Level Up 31 project and the ongoing Clear Path I-465/I-69 construction zones on the north side.

On the southeast side of I-465, variable speed limits will remain active between I-70 and I-65. While the maximum will be 65 mph, limits will fluctuate in 5 mph increments depending on real-time traffic conditions.

The speed limit increase will officially take effect once the new signs are installed.
