Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is under fire for saying that lawmakers who oppose the Trump administration’s immigration policies and ICE operations should consider leaving the United States.
In a recent interview with NewsNation, Uthmeier — a Republican and vocal Trump ally — said,
“You have leaders in this country that are attacking our country… If that’s going to happen, you don’t have to stay here. You can go home. You can leave this country if you hate it so much.”
The remarks came as Uthmeier unveiled a controversial proposal for a new immigration detention center deep in the Florida Everglades. Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the facility would reportedly include:
-
An airstrip to expedite deportation flights
-
A remote, swampy location surrounded by alligators and pythons
-
Housing for people awaiting deportation
Contempt of Court, Defiance of Rulings
Uthmeier is currently facing contempt of court charges for violating a judge’s order that blocked enforcement of parts of a new Florida immigration law. He dismissed the ruling and accused the judiciary of political activism:
“We’re seeing judges across the country that are not following the law. They want to push policy… That is not the role of the judiciary.”
Calls for Deporting Lawmakers
Uthmeier also lashed out at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) after she criticized a military parade held for Trump’s birthday. He suggested she should be deported for her comments, further stoking controversy over his hardline rhetoric.
Blocking Oversight of Detention Conditions
Responding to criticism over immigration detention practices, Uthmeier said Democratic lawmakers trying to inspect ICE facilities are unwelcome at any new site his office supports.
“These leftist radical members of Congress… they’re not going to be able to get to the middle of the Everglades, I’ll tell you that.”
The AG’s remarks are drawing sharp backlash from civil rights groups and immigration advocates, who argue that the Florida government is embracing authoritarian language and weaponizing immigration policy to suppress dissent.
